PISCATAWAY, NJ - The Spotswood High School girls varsity soccer team was surprised by fourth seeded Piscataway High School in the first round of the Greater Middlesex County Tournament on Monday. Spotswood was the 13th seed in the county tournament and lost 6-3 to Piscataway behind four goals by Delia Allwood. Shea Allen and Kaitlyn Aeeb also had goals for Piscataway who advance to the next round to play JP Stevens High School. Allen also had an assist in the win as did Ava Farmer.
Spotswood was down 2-1 at the halftime break and got two goals back in the second half. However, the Chiefs nailed down the first round win with four goals in the second half. Mandee Mendez scored two goals for Spotswood including one on a penalty kick. Kirti Craig had the other goal for the Chargers. Craig also assisted on one of Mendez's goals. Randi Wells set up Craig's score for an assist.
The loss was only Spotswood's third of the season. The Chargers are in second place in the Greater Middlesex Conference Blue Division behind Wardlaw-Hartridge and Metuchen High Schools who are tied for first. Spotswood travels to North Brunswick High School on Friday to play the Raiders at 4 p.m. in a game that was rescheduled from Saturday. The Chargers next opportunity for tournament play will come in the upcoming NJSIAA Central Jersey Group Two Tournament.
