SPOTSWOOD, NJ - With only one key starter graduating last June, the Spotswood High School girls varsity basketball has a strong core of returning players with varsity experience taking the court for the 2019-20 season. The Chargers have one scrimmage remaining this week on Tuesday before kicking off the season on Friday on the road.

Spotswood High School girls varsity basketball coach Vin Vizzi is back behind the bench for the Chargers. The longtime assistant and junior varsity coach took over the reins from former head coach and Schoenly School Physical Education teacher Jill Hetzler last fall. The Chargers were 9-18 for the 2018-19 basketball season.

Savannah Robinson graduated last June, but the Chargers have nine varsity players returning to the lineup including seniors Maddie Hellerich, Jessica Addesso, Megan Devlin, Jackie Gialanella and Cat Riley, junior Julia Massuci and sophomores Giana Oelkers, Ally Clarke and Gianna Perez.

Balancing out the lineup are a talented group of newcomers including sophomore guards Kirti Craig and Lauren Guyette, sophomore forward Laci Brown and freshman guard Ava Hellerich.

Senior guard Maddie Hellerich had a stellar season last year and could notch her 1,000 career point as a Charger during the upcoming season.

"We expect to remain competitive in the Blue Division and challenge ourselves with a strong out of division schedule," Vizzi said of the upcoming 2019-20 season. "Having a solid group of upperclassman helps create a positive environment on and off the court. The team is blending together well and should give us plenty of opportunities to work in different players for different situations."

Spotswood opens up the season with an away game at Highland Park High School on Friday, December 20 at 6 p.m. The Chargers first home game is on Monday, December 23 at 6 p.m. against John F. Kennedy Memorial High School. Spotswood will play in its annual holiday tournament during winter break. Tournament play begins on Saturday, December 28 at Monroe Township High School against Monroe.
