GREELEY, PA - The Spotswood High School cheerleaders headed to the Pine Forest Cheer Camp/United Cheerleading Association from August 25 through August 28. The Chargers attended session six of the camp, which is a top draw for cheerleaders and competitive cheerleading squads throughout the United States. Jerry Preschutti founded the camp in 1970. This summer marked its 48th year.

For the SHS cheerleaders the four-day camp experience was loaded with accomplishments. Angelina Alves, Gabriella Alves, Jovanna Alves, Nicole Gabriel, Alexa Hologounis, Victoria McGrath and Kiera Neves were all  named to the All-American squad. The Alves sisters and Gabriel are all seniors while Hologounis, McGrath and Neves are juniors.  Gabriella, Jovanna and Angelina Alves will be the first triplets to earn four varsity letters after the completion of the upcoming fall cheer season.

Gabriella Alves took home the 11th/12th grade Camp Jump Contest, beating out more than 50 other cheerleaders to win the crown. The team also placed first in the Elite Division Rally Routine, which includes dance choreography, tumbling and pyramid building, and the Sideline Chant.  Spotswood came in second overall in Game Day Performance. The Game Day Performance category incorporates band dance, sideline cheer and crowd-response cheer.

In addition to the trophies and accolades, several Chargers have also been tapped to potentially become a part of the United Cheerleading Association's staff for future camps and events. These team members included the Angelina, Gabriella and Jovanna Alves, Gabriel, Alexis Manfre and Eleni Marakis.

Upon returning home, the cheerleaders have a few more days of summer left before school begins on September 6 though the Chargers have been hard at work this summer in preparation for the upcoming fall cheer season. The varsity cheerleading squad is coached by veteran Spotswood High School educator, Colleen Meyers. Meyers has been at the helm of the varsity cheerleading squad for the past 24 years.

The squad will be on the sidelines for Spotswood High School 2018 season football opener in South Plainfield on September 7. The Chargers open up with an away game against South Plainfield High School on Friday, September 7. Spotswood's first home football matchup will be on Saturday, September 15 when the Chargers take on Dunellen High School at the Spotswood High School Stadium.
