ORLANDO, FL - What a way to close out a varsity cheerleading run at Spotswood High School, parading down Main Street USA in Disney World's Magic Kingdom along with 800 other high school cheerleaders representing 42 states across the nation. Alexa Hologounis and Morgan Taylor, Spotswood High School seniors and members of the Chargers varsity cheerleading squad, participated in the Varsity Spirit Spectacular Parade at Disney World last week. Both teens were chosen to participate in the event along with other captains and co-captains from high school cheerleading squads around the United States after taking part in a Varsity Spirit sponsored camp this summer. Hologounis and Taylor served as captains for the Chargers varsity cheerleading team this fall.
To make the opportunity even more special, the pair are best friends and have been cheering together since they were in kindergarten. Hologounis and Taylor's trip to Disney was the first time Charger cheerleaders have been picked to take part in the Varsity Spirit Spectacular Parade.
"It was an honor to be chosen to represent Spotswood High School at the Varsity Spectacular Parade," Hologounis said. "Ever since I was younger I always looked up to the girls who marched in this parade and always thought it would be such an amazing experience to be just like them. I was so proud to be able to represent our small town at such an amazing event. What was more amazing is that I was able to share this with my best friend!"
"It was such an amazing opportunity to be able to meet cheerleaders from all over the United States," Hologounis continued. "I have made friendships this past weekend that will last a lifetime. The varsity staff was phenomenal. It warmed my heart to see the smiles of the little boys and girls faces as we marched down Main Street. They were so excited!"
"Being chosen to represent SHS in Disney was a huge honor especially because we were the first girls to ever attend the Varsity Spirit Spectacular in Walt Disney World from Spotswood High School," Taylor said of her experience in Florida.
"One highlight that really impacted me and showed the whole value of this trip was when Alexa and I were walking through the Magic Kingdom and a little boy around the age of three asked for a picture with us after he saw us in the parade earlier," Taylor added. "Another highlight of this trip was meeting all of the incredible people also involved in the parade, whether it was the other boys and girls participating from all over the country or the entire Varsity staff who helped make this dream a reality."
"This experience has meant a lot to me because of all the new memories and friends I’ve made," Taylor continued. "Coming from a small school, it was an incredible experience to work with 800 plus other amazing cheerleaders and coaches from around the world."
Varsity Spirit is based in Memphis and holds cheerleading camps, clinics and competitions across the nation, working with almost a million athletes each year. Hologounis and Taylor were in Disney World from November 21 through November 25, performing in the special parade through Disney's Magic Kingdom park while also getting the opportunity to enjoy the famous theme park's amenities.
"This experience has meant so much to me," Hologounis said. "From meeting new people and being able to be a role model for younger children is something I will never forget. I want to thank UCA Cheer Camp for giving me this unbelievable opportunity and the Varsity staff for inviting me to this amazing event. It was truly a once in a lifetime experience that I will cherish forever."
“Dreams really do come true," Hologounis added.
