SPOTSWOOD, NJ - It was a beautiful Saturday afternoon for football with the sun shining and comfortable temperatures, but it was a long one on the field for the Spotswood High School varsity football team. Hillside High School defeated the Chargers by a lopsided score of 54-0. The Comets were 11-1 in 2018 and won the Mid-State 38-Valley conference with a 4-0 division record. Spotswood went into the halftime break down by 41. Hillside added 13 points in the second half. Quarterback Galvin Melendez had three touchdowns. Hillside also had TDs from Mekhi Mitchell, James Westry, James Louis and Jahon Moor.
Spotswood will look to rebound from Saturday's loss next week when the Chargers take the field against South River High School. The Rams won their 100th season opener against Roselle High School 22-20 on Saturday. Spotswood hosts the Rams for this season's game between the two rivals. The Chargers lost last year's matchup with the Rams. Kickoff is at 1 p.m. at the Spotswood High School Stadium.
