MONTCLAIR, NJ - On Wednesday, January 31st at 7:30 p.m., we will host our first in the series in our D.C.
Rice Fellowship Hall located at 14 Midland Avenue, Montclair. Dr. Jeannine Hill Fletcher,
Professor of Theology at Fordham University, will speak on the topic of Christian Supremacy,
White Supremacy: How the Bible was used to promote ideologies of America as a White
Christian Nation.

For four years, Union Baptist Church of Montclair has convened the Interfaith and
Ecumenical Series of Sacred Studies, and facilitated conversation around Race, Justice
and Liberation. We have invited religious leaders from Muslim, Christian and Jewish
communities to share with us from the depth of their faith tradition.

In this 7-Week Bible Study series, clergy persons will interrogate the Bible and explore what it
has to say regarding human dignity, white power and privilege, human enslavement and
liberation, race, oppression and mass incarceration, justice and the prophetic tradition. The
first three sessions will be held at Union Baptist Church and the remaining four will be held at
other churches and a synagogue.

This discussion will highlight some of the research from her new book, The
Sin of White Supremacy: Christianity, Racism and Religious Diversity in America (Orbis,
2017). She will explore some of the many dangerous (mis)uses of Scripture in American
history: in the dispossession and displacement of Native Peoples, the enslavement of Africans,
the exclusion of Asian people from citizenship, and the exploitation of African-Americans and
Latino-Americans. The presentation will highlight some of the key theological themes
identifiable in these patterns, and the legal and material outcomes of these interpretations.
Our discussion will include the use of Christian Scripture and Tradition in the continuing
legacies of these patterns in our present moment, and the use of Scripture and Tradition to
create a more racially just world.

At the conclusion of the Bible Study, the Montclair Clergy Association and the Montclair
African American Clergy Association will welcome 4 new pastors to the township and cover
their respective ministries with prayer and the laying on of hands.
The four new pastors are:
The Rev. Dejon Morris, Bright Hope Baptist Church;
The Rev. Dr. Anita Wright, Senior Pastor, Trinity Presbyterian Church
The Reverends Anya and Scott Sammler- Michael, Co-Pastors, The Unitarian Universalist
Congregation at Montclair
