Beloved Doctor Killed in Pedestrian-Vehicle Accident

ESSEX FELLS, NJ - Dr. Jan Huston was struck and killed by a vehicle while on the sidewalk near her home in Essex Fells on Tuesday morning, officials announced.

The beloved 66-year-old medical director of the Breast Center at HackensackUMC Mountainside in Glen Ridge, was rushed to the same hospital following the accident, where she died a short time later.

According to reports, Huston was struck in the 200 block of Devon Road around 9:25 a.m., according to a statement from Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray and Essex Fells Police Chief William Theilacker, where she was pronounced dead at 9:45 a.m.

No charges have been filed at this time in connection with the driver of the vehicle, who remained at the scene. 

The incident is under investigation.

Huston was the founder and director of Summit Breast Care, prior to joining the Mountainside Medical Group, according to her bio.  She was trained as a general and vascular surgeon, and devoted her career to the diagnosis and treatment of breast disease.

Huston, who dedicated her life to the service of others, had most recently been leading an initiative in collaboration with Montclair township and hospital officials to promote a Spring fitness day in Montclair, set for April 22 at the Salvation Army Citadel.

Huston, is also known as the owner of the 'Montclair horse', Rocky, who passed away last year.
