MONTCLAIR, NJ - Tom Fleming, varsity track coach and teacher at Montclair Kimberley Academy, died suddenly on Wednesday night.

Eyewitnesses reported that 65-year-old Fleming passed away during a meet at the track in Verona.   Unconfirmed reports from eyewitnesses indicated that Fleming may have collapsed during the meet and was pronounced dead a short time later at the hospital. Many people whose lives have been touched by Fleming have expressed their disbelief and condolences.

Fleming won the New York City Marathons in 1973 and 1975. He also earned second place twice in the Boston Marathon, and first place in the Jersey Shore Marathon three times, as well as winning other races in Cleveland, D.C., Toronto and Los Angeles, according to his biography.

While in college at William Paterson University, Fleming became a four-time NCAA College Division All-American, where he graduated in 1973. Fleming joined the coaching staff at Montclair Kimberley Academy in the 1990s, working there as both track coach and fourth grade teacher.

Montclair Kimberley Academy has not yet issued a statement, and there is also no official statement from the Verona Police Department.
