Bomb Threats Made to Temple Beth Shalom in Livingston


LIVINGSTON, NJ — Threats to the Jewish community continued in Livingston on Tuesday morning as the Livingston police and fire departments responded to a bomb threat at Temple Beth Shalom, located at 193 E. Mt. Pleasant Avenue.

According to police, the building was evacuated and secured, but the investigation is continuing. The Essex County Sheriff’s Department, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office and Homeland Security were all notified.

The Essex County Sheriff’s Department assisted at the scene to follow routine protocol. The building was cleared and the children were allowed back inside the school.

Cpt. Gary Marschuetz said the threat came in as a phone call.

“It’s disappointing that there’s been an increase in anti-Semitic behavior,” he said.

This threat comes a month after the Jewish Community Center (JCC) MetroWest in West Orange was one of several JCCs nationwide to receive a bomb threat and weeks after anti-Semitic graffiti was found at South Mountain Reservation.

Livingston Mayor Shawn Klein said that police handled the situation in a capable fashion was happy to hear that all occupants were safely evacuated.
