WEST ORANGE, NJ – The Downtown West Orange Alliance (DWOA) recently unveiled its moveable piece of history, the "Bulb Beam." According to Mike Brick, chairman of the promotion and marketing committee, the historical display will showcase West Orange history while also promoting businesses along the Main Street corridor as the location is periodically moved.

Brick was joined by DWOA Executive Directo Megan Brill who said that the DEOA logo (see photo gallery above) is derived from the 1910 Edison light bulb, known as the "Squirrel Cage" light bulb.

“If you look at it when its lit up, the is this up and down squirrel cage design that looks just like a ‘W,’” said Brill.

Brill said when she took over four years ago as the executive director, one of the things that the committee needed to get done was to create its own logo and begin working on its website.

"We were given a grant from Main Street New Jersey in order to get that done." she said. "And we kind of were just waiting for the new director to take over to really engage and move forward on the logo. So when I took over I realized it was a big deal to have an effective logo. I got Mike Brick and Joseph Fagan, and others, in the room with me and our graphic designer, that was hired by the State to help us. We said no to about fifty different designs.”

Mike Brick, Chairman of the Promotion & Marketing Committee of the DWOA, said that the DWOA created this historical display to spotlight the unique history in West Orange "during the beginning of the electrical age in the entire world."

He said that there is nothing more iconic for West Orange than the light bulb, as it was "the first practical invention using electrical current," according to Brick.
