BLOOMFIELD, NJ - Fans of the fast casual Mexican restaurant Chipotle will soon not have to head to Newark, West Orange, or West Caldwell for a burrito or taco. The company is planning to open a location right here in Bloomfield.

According to a legal notice released today by the Township, Chipotle is coming to the relatively new shopping plaza within the Hartz Mountain Redevelopment Zone at 216-244 Bloomfield Avenue, at the corner of Watsessing Avenue. The company is seeking approval to install two internally illuminated wall mounted signs on the front and side of the storefront. The Bloomfield Planning Board is scheduled to hear the proposal during its meeting on Tuesday, August 8th at 7:00 p.m. at the Bloomfield Municipal Building.

The shopping plaza opened its doors last year, and includes a Modell’s Sporting Goods store, a Madrag location, and Essex County’s first Aldi food market. Situated at the southern edge of the township near the Newark and Belleville borders, the property was previously home to a pet food manufacturing facility run by Hartz, but it closed in 2011 and operations were relocated to a rural Ohio community on the outskirts of Cincinnati. The other part of the property now contains The Grove at One92, a residential development.

Chipotle, like its competitors such as Moe’s Southwest Grill and Qdoba Mexican Grill, as dramatically increased its New Jersey presence in recent years, opening in communities like Newark, Madison, Clifton, and West Caldwell. The company’s website posted applications this week for new crew members at the upcoming Bloomfield location.
