NEWARK, NJ - Stephen A. Smith (ESPN), David Tyree (former NY Giants Football), and Jenny Vrentas (Sports Illustrated) will be honored during Write on Sports (WoS) 10th Anniversary Gala on Wednesday, October 14 at 6pm at The Newark Club, located at 1085 Raymond Boulevard, Newark.

Born in Livingston, Tyree grew up in Montclair. He played high school football at Montclair High School, where he was selected as a Blue Chip Illustrated All-American.

Currently the Director Player Development for the NY Giants, Tyree played in the National Football League (NFL) as wide receiver for seven seasons. He played college football for Syracuse University and was drafted by the New York Giants in the sixth round of the 2003 NFL Draft.

This fundraising gala will honor the three Literacy Champions during the evening’s program with Master of Ceremonies Peter King (Sports Illustrated, MMQB).

Several youth participants from the Essex County area were enrolled in the program this summer as sport reporters and cameramen.

Founded by former Associated Press Sports Editor Byron Yake, the mission of Write on Sports is to inspire middle school youth to write by teaching them to write about sports.

During WoS programs, students learn the basics of good journalism; they apply their knowledge to writing spot stories and a feature piece during a two-week camp. The goal is to encourage students to become more confident writers. They role play, write scripts and produce videos on computers.

Guest journalists and athletes hold press conferences with the students; interviewing guests is a good way to build self-confidence. In addition to camps and after-school programs, WoS holds special one-day events. A camp includes up to 30 students. The student-teacher ratio is about 4:1, giving each student personalized assistance. Teachers are certified and many are from the local school district where the camps are held, tuition-free.

Write on Sports, a non-profit organization, receives funding from individuals, foundations and corporations. The Gala is vital to raising the necessary funds to continue programming. For ticket and sponsorship information, please contact Joni Bronander at Joni@writeonsports.org or 973-783-5588.
