Essex County Freeholder Gill Honors Local Residents

Holding the resolution she was presented.

MONTCLAIR, NJ – The year 2014, marked the 25th anniversary of the Montclair African American Heritage Foundation (MAAHF).  An organization that has built its foundation upon recognizing the accomplishments of others, has an opportunity to be recognized for 25 years of service to the community.

For 25 years, the MAAHF has recognized the contributions of exemplary individuals at their annual tribute dinner, provided scholarships and educational endeavors through the annual fundraising event, and showcased the arts and businesses through the annual parade and festival.

During the Essex County Board Chosen Freeholders meeting held in the Montclair Municipal Building tonight, Freeholder Brendan Gill presented a resolution to the Montclair African American Heritage Foundation (MAAHF) on 25 years of service.  Freeholder Gill also gave resolutions to the two Grand Marshalls of the parade and festival.

Al Pelham, who is the MAAHF co-chair, accepted the resolution on behalf of the MAAHF.

“It was nice for the MAAHF to have been honored for 25 years of service,” said James Eason.  “I was on the committee 25 years ago when we started and we have come a long way.”

Katherine Nicholas was presented a resolution recognizing her as Grand Marshall of the 2014 MAAHF Parade and Festival.  Grand Marshall, Everett Christmas, Sr. could not be in attendance.

The Montclair African American Heritage Foundation’s literature states that the annual event attracts, “12,000-15,000 patrons to Montclair and is one of the longest running celebrations of African American culture in the State of New Jersey.”

“I was honored to have Freeholder Gill honor me.  I am glad they thought enough of me to do this,” said Grand Marshall Katherine Nichols. “I was on the committee when they started 25 years ago.  I’m pleased that it continued as long as it has.”
