PATERSON, NJ - Frankenstein's monster can barely walk. Zombies are a little faster, but still rather plodding. Mummies can jog but (being unable to see) they run into everything.

Nevertheless, those are the types of creatures you'll likely find participating in the upcoming "Halloween 3.1 5K to Scare Hunger Away."

When the charity event takes place Oct 30 at Garret Mountain Reservation in Woodland Park, there will be some very fast people wearing some very weird outfits. The organizers of the Halloween-themed race - which benefits a local food bank - urge runners to trade their tiny shorts and flimsy tops for mummy wrap, Vampira fingernails, witch hats ... you get the picture.

The event is being hosted by Barwick Marketing & Events Group. Money raised will go to CUMAC, a non-profit agency "dedicated to alleviating hunger and its root causes in Paterson, Passaic County and northern New Jersey," according to a press release.

Robert Barwick, owner of Barwick Marketing & Events Group, started the race last year. "In Passaic County alone, thousands of local residents are struggling to meet their basic needs," said the statement. "Charitable organizations like CUMAC are providing vital services to low-income families in the area every day, but resources often run low at this time of year."

The race will include a timed and USATF-certified course but it won't be all about running fast. There will be trick-or-treat stations for all ages, a Kids Fun Run, prizes for top finishers and best costumes, food, music and giveaways. Barwick Group will also be presenting awards for best costumes after the race. 

“The Halloween 5K is such an important event” said Lynne Bruger, CUMAC Development Director. “The timing of the race brings in essential support right before our notoriously busy end of year.  We'll feed about 7,000 people and provide holiday gifts to over 1,000 area children in November and December alone. Every person who runs or walks that day will help to make that possible.”

All participants and spectators are asked to bring non-perishable food items. “Events like this one show that we really all can help end hunger in our communities, and have a little fun along the way,” said Bruger. 

Barwick, who has been coordinating events for more than 20 years, hopes this year's installment of the event will be even more successful than last year's, thanks to some new partners and surprised. “It’s a joy knowing that by using our talent as race coordinators we can give back to the community,” he said.
