Indoor Snow Day Suggestions for Kids

NEW JERSEY - Before the snow ends and New Jersey residents can head out the door for snowman building, sledding and of course, shoveling, families are stuck inside. As many parents know, despite the presence of quite a few toys and options, children bore easily. When boredom sets in so do the arguments and other problems. So, how can parents and kids make their time spent indoors as fun as when the storm is over?

Here are some activites and ideas that will keep children busy when going outside isn't on the agenda.

  • Pull out the board games. Storms are a fabulous time for the classics like Scrabble, Monopoly and Candy Land. Unlike the Xbox, board games work whether the power is on or not.
  • Color. Even adults color now to receive stress. Coloring is a great family activity that everyone can do regardless of age.
  • Bake. Even little ones can get involved in the baking process and they love it. An indoor snow day is the perfect time to bake cookies and cupcakes.
  • Cook. Like baking, cooking is something kids like to take part in because they rarely get the opportunity to do it. Little hands can help measure, pour and even clean up. Make-your-own-pizza is a simple one.
  • Like coloring, an arts and crafts project is a fun way to spend an afternoon. Pinterest and other websites often have simple crafts for kids of all ages. If the power is out, grab some paper, markers, glue and scissors and let kids create.
  • Pull out a time-tested jigsaw puzzle. Large puzzles are a great family activity. Clear the dining room table and get to work.
  • Who doesn't want to curl up with a good book on a snowy afternoon? Read.
  • Settle in on the couch with those newly baked cookies and watch a movie that's age-appropriate for the whole family.
  • Have a dance party. Music is a fabulous stress reliever for all and a great form of exercise. Put on some music and let loose.
  • Have a clear out. Organizing the house is often on everyone's list of New Year's resolutions. Even kids can help clean out their closets and drawers of clothes that don't fit any longer or toys that they've out grown.
  • Do some homework. Sure, this won't be the popular one, but don't count on school being closed when the snow stops. Kids don't have to spend a lot of time on this one, but there's nothing wrong with getting homework done for the weekend or a jump on projects and papers for teens.
  • Help kids make a fort in the living room or bedroom. This is always a good time, buster. However, be prepared to climb in when it's done. Kids like company.
  • Have a indoor snowball fight with cotton balls or small pillows.

When the storm ends, the shoveling starts, so try and enjoy the inside downtime.
