Kids' Slime-Making Craze Causes Local Glue Shortage

WESTFIELD, NJ — Having trouble finding school glue and borax locally? Blame it on the slime-making craze that has  kids and parents buying up the ingredients as fast as stores can stock their shelves.

Petra Guglielmetti, a Westfield mom of three, said she learned about the slime craze after daughter’s first-grade teacher sent home notes asking her to bring in more glue.

“For weeks Target has been out, but I had no idea why,” Guglielmetti said. “It’s so weird.”

Gregory Gwyn-Williams, owner of Baron’s Drug Store in Downtown Westfield, said there is plenty of glue on his shelves. At least, there is for now.

Johanna Sexton, a sixth grade student at Edison Intermediate School, said she learned how to make slime by watching YouTube.

“I love slime,” she said.

“She makes it every day,” her mom, Julie Steinberg, said. “And when she doesn’t have the ingredients for slime, she makes oobleck.” Made from cornstarch and water, oobleck is more like putty, and it’s the reason cornstarch has becoming harder to find, too.

There are other kinds of slime, as well, such as fluffy slime (made with shaving cream), glitter slime and scented slime.

Annette Ferrigno, owner of Westfield-based Kids for Kids, A Mindfulness Movement, included slime-making during her President's Day weekend mindfulness retreats for boys and girls in Fanwood.

“Recently, so many girls that I work with rave about it,” said Ferrigno, who also counsels children, adolescents, families and adults in her private practice. “So many girls — and some boys, but mostly girls — are making it.”

Ferrigno is a trained play therapist.

“A lot of the toys that I use in my office have a sensory component,” she said. “When you try to be mindful, you use your five senses. With slime, you use touch.”

She also had the children add essential oils for scent. Some poured their homemade slime into balloons to create stress balls.

“You sprinkle baby powder inside the balloon so it doesn’t stick,” Ferrigno explained.

While making slime is fairly easy, finding the ingredients you need is harder, she agreed.

“There’s small bottles of glue, but you cannot buy larger things of glue in the area,” Ferrigno said. “I ended up buying it online because the stores were all out of it.”

Haley Warren, a 12-year-old from Scotch Plains, demonstrated her fluffy slime recipe (below) during Monday’s Kids for Kids retreat.  

Haley's Fluffy Slime Recipe:

3 Tbs. borax

1 cup hot water (mix until borax dissolves - set aside in separate bowl)

In another bowl add:

1/2 cup school glue

1/2 cup shaving cream 

1 Tbs. cornstarch

After combining above ingredients, slowly add borax mixture (be sure to wear gloves when handling borax) until slime begins to form.  Slime is tricky!  Sometimes it has a mind of its own so play around with it — kneed it, stretch it and roll it until it takes shape.

You can also add:

1/2 cup foam soap to create more fluff

Add these special ingredients for a special twist:

Food colors of choice

Glitter

Essential oils (lavender to relax, citrus blends to wake up)

Make your own stress ball:

Coat medium-size balloon with baby powder. Lay slime onto balloon and roll balloon over slime until it is a ball shape. Tie off at end and use to help you relax while doing homework, at night to sleep or whenever you need to slow down.
