Press Releases

Last Date to Change Party Affiliation for Primary Election is April 12.

Mark your calendars for the upcoming Primary Election on Tuesday, June 6, 2017.  New Jersey has a closed primary system, meaning only voters who are registered members of a political party may participate in nominating that party's candidates. Currently only the Democratic and Republican parties hold primary elections - other parties nominate their candidates in different ways.

If you are currently a registered voter affiliated with a political party, but want to switch your affiliation before the primary election, you must do so by April 12, 2017. You must file a Political Party Affiliation Declaration Form with your county Commissioner of Registration/Superintendent of Elections to change party affiliations.

If you are not currently affiliated with a political party you may declare up to and including Primary Election Day at the polls. If you are unsure of your party affiliation you can contact your Commissioner of Registration/Superintendent of Elections
