Letter to the Editor: President Trump Has Abandoned Our Nation

The horror at the alt-right rally in Charlottesville is a seminal moment in our nation's history, which has been tragically lost on our president. We witnessed vestiges of hate thought to be buried in the past; Nazis carrying flags with swastikas, KKK members with torches chanting anti-Semitic and anti- racial slurs. Images seen on newsreels of Nazi Germany or on television coverage of the Jim Crow era were now being witnessed in real time with the purpose of infiltrating our civil society.

Make no mistake, this rise in White Supremacists, Nazis and KKK promoted by the alt - right did not happen in a vacuum. There is a clear and distinct thread to Donald Trump, the candidate and now to Donald Trump, President of the United States. His bigoted rhetoric calling Mexicans rapists and advocating for a Muslim ban opened the door to bigotry giving racists and anti-Semites license instead of being relegated to the hidden shadows where they had always been and where they belong. In an instant, these haters saw themselves as legitimate because of Donald Trump.

This is a pivotal moment for America when a righteous leader must rise up with the full understanding of the gravity of the situation and mobilize the country to stamp out this extremist hate designed to tear us apart. We needed a strong heartfelt statement from our president, but instead we were met with a weak and feckless response that lacked any degree of morality or empathy. This is all in light a young woman who lost her life at the hands of a domestic terrorist.

It is incredulous that Trump has now emboldened these dangerous groups instead of them letting them rot in their well-deserved disgrace. Unless and until our president tells the alt-right directly to stop associating him with their group, to stop wearing his hats and unequivocally tells David Duke to stop using his name as part and parcel of the KKK mission, then he is complicit, plain and simple.

Our president’s statement that there some “very fine people” marching with the Nazis was shameful. There were no fine people, only hostile people chanting, “Jews will not replace us” and terrorizing the truly fine people.

So far, Donald Trump has sided with Putin over our intelligence agencies, denigrated our justice system, called the FBI Nazis, alienated our allies, praised brutal dictators, and now emboldens the KKK, White Supremacists, and Nazis. This man who is un-American in my opinion, disgraces the office of the Presidency and threatens our national security on many levels.

If special prosecutor Mr. Mueller finds enough evidence for a crime against the president, whether it be obstruction of justice or anything else which qualifies as an impeachable offense, then it is incumbent upon Republicans in the House to do what is right for this country and impeach this him. He is unqualified to be President of the United States of America and presents a clear and present danger to our country.

We need to rid ourselves of the scourge on our country called Donald Trump.
