MAPLEWOOD, NJ — At least two dozen string players gathered for a socially distanced crowd in Memorial Park to remember Elijah McClain.
More than 100 people spread out and listened to local musicians playing and elected officials and others speaking. It was one of many violin vigils across the country, honoring McClain for volunteering at an animal shelter, playing his violin to calm stressed animals. The vigil was organized by SOMA Action.
The Aurora, Colorado massage therapist died at police hands on August 24, 2019. The case against the officers got new life after an online petition to reexamine the incident started at the beginning of June. It now has more than 800,000 signatures.
