MONTCLAIR, NJ - The Montclair Basketball League held its championship game at Glenfield Park Saturday.

Co-founded by Dwayne Claiborne and Ed Pelham three years ago, the 18-and-older league seeks to give spectators and athletes something to do on Saturday afternoons in the summer.

Saturday's championship game was a toss-up between Hoop Troop and BT Express.  "BT Express won in a thriller by the score of 64-61," said Pelham.

BT Express is sponsored by Bruce Terry who has sponsored a team all 3 years.  They were lead by the regular season MVP and leading scorer at 24 points per game, Spencer Grayson.  Grayson finished the Championship game with 31 points and won the Championship Game as MVP.

“We have been doing this for three years. We started with six teams and now we have 10 teams,” said Claiborne. “I was born and raised in Montclair. Growing up, this is what I saw. For a time, there was a lapse in basketball in the park. I had an idea that I could start basketball back up so that the young kids could have something to do when they come here.”

The teams are sponsored by local businesses and community leaders and have branched out to play teams in other communities. Claiborne added, “We have all of our sponsors from Montclair and they help to run the league. This is a good way to give back to a community you grew up in."

Pelham added, "We are looking to expand the league each year and if someone would like to sponsor a team or play, then they can visit our website. We are not getting any financial gain from this, but wanted to give the players something to do once they age out of the youth league. The budget helps us to buy the plaques, trophies and other essentials."

"The summer league starts the first Saturday in June and runs until the last Saturday in August," Claiborne said. "This is something for people to do in the evenings on Saturdays in the summer where people can come out and watch a good game of basketball.”
