MONTCLAIR, NJ - Eyewitnesses reported seeing lightening strike the area of Greenwood Avenue and Walnut Street followed by a loud explosion that occurred sometime around 5:30 p.m. on Friday.

Soon after hearing the explosion and seeing fire on the transformer near the Senior Care Center, Montclair firefighters rushed to the scene of Greenwood Avenue. Near the Walnut Street intersection, they fought to extinguish the blaze in the transformer.

The Walnut Street train crossing gates remained closed and officers directed traffic to assist motorists with crossing the tracks. Residents living and working in the vicinity reported power outages.

It has not yet been confirmed whether a lightening strike caused the explosion and subsequent blaze. The determination is pending an investigation. There were no reported injuries.
