Montclair Mayor Jackson Single-Handedly Cleaning Up Montclair Park, Inspires Others

MONTCLAIR, NJ - Montclair Mayor Robert Jackson had no idea that his decision to walk around Montclair's Glenfield Park picking up trash would inspire others to do the same.

Dennis Crawley, a longtime 4th ward resident, said that he saw Mayor Jackson in Glenfield Park picking up trash for two days straight. He said, "I saw that he was in the park with a trash bag picking up the trash by himself on Saturday."

"...but when I came out on Sunday morning and he was out there picking up trash again, I just had to stop him and ask him what he was doing."

Crawley said that the Mayor told him that all of the parks in Montclair are clean and so when he sees trash in Glenfield Park, he wanted to make sure that Glenfield Park stays just as clean as the other parks. Crawley then said that he left and came back an hour later and Jackson was still there picking up trash at 7am on Easter Sunday. "When I came back and he was still there picking up trash by himself, I knew that I had to do something."

Crawley, who also coaches Pop Warner football in the community, told TAPinto Montclair exclusively that he will begin to organize groups of people to join in next Saturday, April 22 at 8am, in an effort to clean up Glenfield Park. "My Mayor doesn't have to do this alone," he added. "We will show him that he has support."

Crawley later posted a photo and the following caption on his social media page, that read:

"Yesterday & this morning I seen The Honorable Mayor Jackson of Montclair in Glenfield Park picking up trash .
I said hello & had a conversation with him, and he said that the park was not looking good & that he was going to clean it up .
I thought to myself he's the mayor, why wouldn't he just have the township clean it up?
But he's looking at it from a personal perspective not professional.
Community responsibility depends on community Unity!
[Why not] stand with Mayor Jackson and clean up Glenfield Park?
So I extend an invitation to join me and my family to picking up trash Saturday, April 22nd at 8 a.m.
Meet me at the park house.
I will have bags and gloves."

Glenfield Park is property owned and managed by Essex County.

Jackson later responded to TAPinto Montclair saying, "I appreciate Mr. Crawley and I hope that our community lets the world know that we take pride in and take care of the facilities in our community."
