Montclair Pop Warner Teams Advance to Championship Weekend


MONTCLAIR, NJ - The Bulldog Junior Pee Wee (ages 8-11) and Midget (ages 12-14) cheerleaders both placed second in the North Jersey Pop Warner Cheerleading competition Sunday in front of 1,500 in attendance at Elizabeth High School.

The young ladies defended their 2013 title against some tough competition throughout North Jersey. The locals will now advance the to the Nov. 8 regional tournament in Trenton and the 15th in Albany, N.Y. to have the opportunity to cheer at the Nationals in Disney World in Orlando in December.

On the football side of the program, the flag football blue and white teams (ages 5-7) closed out their superb season last Saturday at the North jersey Flag-a-thon in Hillside. The blue team lost their first game of the season to finish the season 6-1-1. Team standouts were Sammad Jiles, Kendall Jones, Malichi Goodman and Reed Oliver.

The white team won by forfeit to improve to 5-3 on the season. Team standouts, Viraj Moore, Justin Gray, JP Fiore, Bryce Exum and Amir Bembrey. 

The Mitey Mights (ages 7-9) finished their season (2-5-2) in the Pumpkin Bowl last Saturday the East Orange Jaguars. The Mighty Mites are the first entry level, for the Montclair program. Team standouts Malichi Lewis, Isaiah Holm, Jalen Lavan, Charles Drane, William Hoffman and Lucas St. Germain.

The unbeaten Jr Pee Wee’s (ages 8-11) improved to 9-0 on the season and their 9th shutout by defeating the Elizabeth Saints 14-0 in the Semifinal game of the North jersey Pop Warner Playoffs. 

The Bulldogs got on the board first when on the opening drive locals used the ground and pound format to drive down to the Saints 15 yard line when on the 3rd play, running back Kyle Readus took a handoff to the ride side on an impressive run for the score, the extra point attempt failed 6-0. The standout Montclair defense held the Saints at bay for the remainder of the half.  

In the second half, the Saints started from their own 20 yard line, but the Bulldog defense drove them back to their own 5 yard line. On the 3rd down the Bulldogs swarmed on the saint’s quarterback for the safety (2pt) to take an 8-0 lead.  On the next possession, Bulldog Qb Nick Dunneman connected with wide out Ashton Sanchez with a 20 yard strike to the Saints 5 yard line . QB/RB Michael Robinson, scored on a five yard plunge to push the score to 14-0 to seal the victory for the locals. Jr Pee Wee’s move onto NJPW Championship this weekend TBA against the Linden Tigers. Game standouts were Amahad Hutchins, Henry Painter, Jahiem Lowe.

In the game against Linden, Montclair got the ball Michael Robinson hit Jahiem Lowe with a 10 yard pass to secure the victory next for the Bulldogs Linden Tigers in North Jersey Pop Warner Championship  

Pee Wee’s (ages 9-12) 8-1 advanced to the Championship this weekend, with a tough 14-8 wins over the Jackie Robinson Bears (Newark). The Bears scored on its first possession to take the lead 8-0. The pee wee’s finally got things going late in the 1st quarter when QB Arsheen Jiles broke loose on a 70 yd keeper for the score, a failed extra point attempt  left the locals trailing 8-6.

In the second half the teams traded possession, but both defenses stalled each other’s offense out then, in the 3th quarter the bulldogs took the lead when on a 3rd and goal situation. Jiles got into the end zone from 1 yd out and a Max Jennings extra point field goal (2pts) game the locals the lead 14-8. The Bulldog defense gained momentum and held the bears’ defense in check the remainder of the game, for the win.

Montclair Standouts, Michael O’Mueller, Dhani Clifford, Patrick Caughey, and Elijah Brown.

Midgets (ages 12-14) 7-2 Advanced to the NJPW Championship this weekend with an exciting 15-12 win over the Jackie Robinson Bears. Montclair controlled the game with a an early touchdown when, The upstart defense lead by Defensive tackle Christian Sanchez forced a Jackie Robinson fumble in the end zone for a Montclair touchdown, an extra point reception was caught by Dustin Spehar for the 7-0 lead. After a couple of possessions, The Bears got on the board with a long run to tighten the score 7-6 late in 2nd quarter.  Montclair had a chance to increase the league before the half on the Bears 2 yard line, but the stout defense of the bears kept Montclair out of the end zone.

In the second half, Montclair kept their offense going when RB Jordan White plunged in the end zone from 25 yards out, a extra point kick by Shane Mills. To take the lead 15-6 early in the 4th quarter, the bears made things interesting when they broke loose for a 65 yd score with 4 minutes left, the stout defense of the bulldogs prevailed and held on for the victory to advance to the championship this weekend. Game standouts, Elijah Coates, Nate Dalger, Amare Whitter, Steven Rose and Julian Zincani.
