Montclair Students to Play in First Ron Epp 8th Grade All-Star Basketball Game, March 11 in Cedar Grove

CEDAR GROVE, NJ - Cedar Grove will host the 1st Annual Ron Epp All-Star Game for eighth grade Suburban players at Cedar Grove High School on March 11 -- girls begin at 1:30 p.m. and the boys will play at 3:30 p.m.  The event is dedicated and named for Cedar Grove's long-time recreation director Ron Epp, who passed away in 2014.

Players will be selected by their coaches and will represent all of the towns in the Suburban basketball league.

Cedar Grove recreation directory Marisa Landolfi said it was eighth grade boys coach, Phil Negra, who suggested an all-star game and who has been working with her to make the game happen.

"When the Suburban League had our annual basketball meeting I mentioned it to everyone, let them know that Cedar Grove would host and organize the event all we needed from the other towns were the players," Landolfi said.  " The dedication to Ron Epp actually came about when all the Rec directors were throwing ideas around on what to call the All-Star game and it was the Verona's Jim Cunningham who came up with the suggestion to have it named after Ron and of course everyone thought it was a great idea."

Fans will pay $2 to cheer on the players.  Landolfi said that the proceeds will go to the fund the All-Star game the following year, purchasing uniforms, trophies, refs and anything else needed for the game. Landolfi said she is hoping that the event will gain in popularity and eventually be a fund raiser for other good causes.

The towns that will participate will be as follows;

Division A: West Essex, Millburn, West Caldwell, Cedar Grove, South Orange, Verona, Glen Ridge

Division B: Montclair, Bloomfield, Livingston, Orange, West Orange, Maplewood, Nutley, Belleville

Division A: West Essex, Caldwell/West Caldwell, Verona, South Orange/Maplewood, Cedar Grove, Millburn, Glen Ridge

Division B: Livingston, West Orange, Nutley, Bloomfield, Belleville, Orange, Montclair

Caldwell/West Caldwell Director, Gabe DiMasi and Millburn Assistant Superintendent of Recreation, Neal Healy have volunteered to ref the games this year being that they are both carded referees.
