MONTCLAIR, NJ - Buzz Aldrin Middle School is official in Montclair.
Hundreds of local residents, students and community leaders gathered together to celebrate the renaming of the Mount Hebron Middle School on Friday morning. During a ceremony on the steps of the school, the school was officially renamed after one of its graduates and the second man to walk on the moon, Astronaut Buzz Aldrin.
Along with being the second man to walk on the moon, Aldrin is also the first man to do a five and a half hour space walk and the first man to take a selfie in space. “My time at Mt. Hebron Middle School strongly prepared me for Montclair High School. I credit my education in Montclair with helping me accomplish much of what I did later in my life”.
Aldrin also addressed the current students, in a private assembly, encouraging them to be the best that they can be. Buzz Aldrin embodied being the best he could be throughout his lifetime. He graduated third in his class at West Point Military Academy, was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Air Force, eventually attaining the rank of Colonel. After earning a Doctorate in Astronautics from MIT, Aldrin was selected as a member of the third group of NASA astronauts.
Jill Sack ,the principal of the new Buzz Aldrin Middle School stated, “This is an incredibly exciting time for our school. We have a special opportunity to teach our kids about a man who has actually walked on the moon. Who knows where our students’ hard work and dreams will take them? I can’t wait and see!”
Not only is this renaming an exciting time, it is also a strong message to the students. Edwin "Buzz" Eugene Aldrin, Jr. was once an ordinary child just like all of the other children attending Buzz Aldrin Middle School.
By the time he graduated he had set out to accomplish extraordinary things and he ended up accomplishing them. Aldrin is not a talker, he is a doer and if he can achieve greatness so can the other students of Buzz Aldrin Middle School, school officials told students.
