Primary Election Results for Montclair Area: Sherrill, Webber to Face-Off


MONTCLAIR, NJ - The most hotly contested election in the Montclair area has nearly come to a close, narrowing it down to only two party-backed candidates sparring for the 11th Congressional District seat vacated by Republican incumbent Rodney Frelinghuysen, after announcing in January that he will not seek re-election.

With preliminary results tallied, Mikie Sherrill, a former Navy helicopter pilot swept the Democratic nomination receiving 77.3% of the vote in the district, while Assemblyman Jay Webber captured the nomination for the Republican Party with 39.9%.

The unofficial results for the 2018 Primary Election in the Montclair area were as follows:

Republican Bob Hugin and Democrat Robert Menendez will represent their respective political parties in the general election for the one open seat in the Senate. With 73.21% of the Democratic vote, Menendez received 33,648 votes. With 76.17% of the Republican vote, Hugin received 6,004 votes.


Democratic Incumbent Donald Payne, Jr. and Republican challenger Agha Khan will represent their respective parties in the general election for the 10th Congressional District. With 93.26% of the Democratic vote, Payne received 22,456 votes. With 97.84% of the Republican vote, Khan received 770 votes.


Republican Jay Webber and Democrat Mikie Sherrill will represent their respective parties in the general election for the one open seat in the House. With 81.52% of the Democratic vote, Sherrill received 13,229 votes. Though Webber came in third place in Essex County with the Republican vote, preliminary results indicate that he won the vote in the district. Essex County tallies are as follows: 

Antony E. GHEE: 36.84%; 2,201 Votes

Peter De NEUFVILLE: 30.81%; 1,841 Votes

Jay WEBBER: 28.90%; 1,727 Votes


Incumbent Democrat Joseph N. DiVincenzo received 99.6% of the Democratic vote with 40,714 votes. While Republican challenger John Chiaia received 63.47% of the vote for a total of 4,484 votes.


Democratic Incumbent Armando Fontoura received 99.81% of the Democratic vote for a total of 40,001 votes. Republican challenger Pasquale Capozzoli received 65.74% of the Republican vote for a total of 4670 votes.

Democrat Tyshammie Cooper ran unopposed for the District 3 Freeholder unexpired term and received a total of 8,036 votes.
