BLOOMFIELD, NJ - The Essex County Sheriff’s Crime Stoppers Program is offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to an arrest and conviction in an unsolved homicide that took place in Bloomfield Feb. 3.
At approximately 6:54 p.m. Juan Santos Martinez, 55, of East Orange was shot and killed while seated in the driver side of his vehicle in the 200 block of Ampere Parkway in Bloomfield. A 5 series four-door BMW was seen fleeing the scene.
On the night of the shooting, neighbors in the area reported that they heard "5 or 6 shots" fired. Another neighbor reported that "the guy was performing CPR on him." The "guy" was confirmed by Bloomfield Public Safety Director Samuel DeMaio to be a Bloomfield Police Officer who arrived at the scene shortly after the shots were fired. Neighbors reported that there was a fast response with multiple BPD vehicles reporting to the scene. The victim was pronounced dead at 7:12 p.m. according to Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas S. Fennely, of the Prosecutor's Homicide Unit.
After Bloomfield Police secured the area, the Essex County Prosecutors Office Homicide Task Force arrived on the scene.
