CASTLETON, VT - Montclair High School graduate, Tyreek Staton is now setting records in college and has recently earned the title of Rookie Wrestler of the Week.
Staton, who is now a student at Castleton University in Vermont, recently scored a decision victory over one of the top wrestlers in the region, thus earning his 19th dual match victory of the season.
After that stunning victory, Staton, a resident of Montclair, NJ, consequently was named the New England Wrestling Association Rookie Wrestler of the Week, announced Tuesday by the organization.
In the 125-pound match, Staton improved his overall record to 26-6 and his dual match mark to 19-3 with a 7-5 decision victory over Matt Morris of Williams, a two-time place winner at the NCAA Regionals. Staton has won four straight matches, five of his last six contests, and 11 of his 13 previous matches, University officials confirm.
According to a Release, Staton has enjoyed an impressive first season of collegiate wrestling, as he is second on the team with the 26 overall wins and tied for first on the squad with his 19 dual match victories. He spent time in the D3wrestle.com rankings earlier this season, plus he finished second in the 125-pound bracket at the Ted Reese Invitational Dec. 3 and fourth at the Williams Open Jan. 29.
