School of Rock Band to Light Up the Stage at Just Jakes Each Saturday

All summer long, concerts by School of Rock Montclair campers will heat up Saturday afternoons at Just Jake's.

School of Rock Montclair will present a series of Saturday afternoon rock concerts throughout July and August at Just Jake's, located at 30 Park Street. The bands will be composed of youngsters ages 7 to 17 who are attending the School of Rock Montclair’s themed summer camps, and the concerts will highlight a variety of tributes to superstars of the music world.

"The students begin camp on Monday and are taught how to read song charts, they're given a crash course in music theory, they get a history lesson on the music that they'll be performing, and they start learning their songs," says School of Rock Montclair General Manager Kevin March. "On Saturday, the kids take all that they've learned and perform it in a real rock show at Just Jake's, and that's where the real education happens. It’s quite impressive how the kids handle such a challenge and then successfully 'serve it up' when they hit the stage. They're truly amazing."

The concerts will feature two to three bands that are assembled based on students' skill levels, with each band performing several songs.

“Many of the kids are somewhat familiar with the songs before they get started, but by Saturday, they make them their own,” says March. “The look on their faces when they walk into Just Jake's is priceless: big stage, big lights, big sound system - and they can’t wait to get rocking."

The School of Rock Montclair summer camp concert series will feature tributes to the following bands:

  • 7/16 - The Beatles
  • 7/23 - Nirvana
  • 7/30 - Led Zeppelin
  • 8/6 - Queen
  • 8/13 - The Who
  • 8/20 - Songwriting camp competition (winning song will be awarded free studio time to record their composition at a state-of-the-art professional studio)
  • 8/27 - The Beatles

"Incredible transformations happen during camp week," says Matt Sandoski, owner and general manager of the School of Rock Montclair. "Guitar players become bass players, drummers become keyboard players, kids who didn't know they could sing are fronting six-piece rock bands. Students who were quiet and reserved on Monday are wearing leather boots and shades and whooping up the crowd on Saturday. Parents love the energy that the kids put in the room. Most of them are wiping away tears by the end of the show, even the dads!"

School of Rock Montclair's Summer Camp Concert Series will be held on Saturdays in July and August at Just Jake's, 30 Park Street. Doors open at 11:30am; show time is from noon to 1:30pm. Admission is free for 17 and under and $5 for adults.  For more information about the shows, call the School of Rock Montclair, 125 Valley Road, at 973-337-9224.
