To the Editor:
I want to alert every working American to a case now before the U.S. Supreme Court. It is called “Janus vs. AFSCME” and it seeks to defund and cripple the same labor unions that, over decades, have raised every American’s standard of living.
Even if your workplace is not unionized, you can thank our American labor unions for locking in higher standards in your work and family life. But all of our advances - middle class wages, safer workplaces, and benefits like health insurance and paid vacations – are under attack. Just ask any frustrated worker in the growing “gig” economy.
I am a healthcare professional, a state employee and a public servant for 24 years. I truly love my job. I feel fortunate to be in a position to help my neighbors – the children, families, and seniors in my workplace and community. As public servants, we also keep an eye on the poor, the sick and people in distress. We belong to unions so we can keep giving our best to you, the citizens of a nation we love. We have your back and our unions have our backs.
Our public employee unions negotiate good contracts for the people who serve you every day – fire and police; educators, healthcare professionals and social workers; local and state employees and more. We are the human infrastructure that keeps our communities humming.
Keep your eye on the “Janus case” and the U.S. Supreme Court. We will see if it is a friend to the working men and women who truly make America great.
