Township Officials: No Advisories Have Been Issued for Montclair Water

MONTCLAIR, NJ - On Thursday night, the township of Bloomfield issued a ‘boil water advisory’ to their community after discovering E. Coli in the drinking water.  As a result, Montclair residents have been contacting Montclair Township officials to determine whether this also applies to Montclair.

On Friday, Montclair Township officials posted the following statement to the town’s website:

“In light of the recent boil water advisory issued by Bloomfield Township, a number of Montclair water customers have contacted the township Water Bureau about the safety of Montclair water. Montclair water is from a different water system and no advisories have been issued for Montclair water.”

The township of Montclair’s drinking water source comes from the North Jersey District Water Supply Commission (NJDWSC) which owns and operates the Wanaque Reservoir and Treatment Plant as well as the Monksville Reservoir. The water is then received by the township of Montclair through the Grove Street pumping station and then is pumped throughout Montclair and Glen Ridge.  The Montclair water system includes 3 municipal wells in town.

Whereas, the City of Newark supplies water to the Township of Bloomfield.  The City of Newark’s water supply is from the Pequannock and Wanaque watersheds.  The Pequannock watersheds supplies five reservoirs (Charlottesburg, Echo Lake, Canistear, Clinton and Oak Ridge Reservoirs).  The Wanaque watershed provides water to two reservoirs which are the Wanaque Reservoir and the Monskville Reservoir, which is why some people have been calling the Montclair Water Bureau for clarity.

Because of the close proximity of the towns, Montclair area residents have been concerned with the Bloomfield “boil water advisory’.  However, Montclair Township officials have expressed that no advisories have been issued for Montclair water.

If anyone has any questions, log onto the NJDEP’s source water web site or contact the Montclair Water Bureau at (973) 744-4600.  For more information and updates, you may also log onto the Montclair Township website.
