WEST ORANGE, NJ -- (UPDATED 6:45 p.m.) A two-alarm fire broke out in The Loft section of the Wilshire Grand Hotel on April 28. The fire was out in twenty minutes and there were no injuries.
The West Orange Fire Department says the fire was caused by construction crews working on the Primavera Restaurant. The fire was seen coming from the roof of the structure when it was called in at approximately 4:23 p.m. The West Orange Fire Department was assisted by units from Orange and Verona. Tanker units were augmented by line water to knock down the fire before it was called as contained.
Police and fire officials cleared the hotel floor by floor and secured the entrances as the fire was being put out. Two elderly residents were transferred to the hospital for causes unrelated to the fire.
Pleasantdale Avenue was closed to traffic in both directions, causing major traffic at the height of rush hour.
The hotel has reopened, but the Primavera Restaurant will remain closed for several days for repairs.
