MONTCLAIR, NJ - New Jersey Transit alerted riders of delays of up to 30 minutes on the Montclair - Boonton line due to fire department activity during the Tuesday morning commute.
At 6:51 a.m., Montclair Fire officials responded to a report on the railroad tracks in Glen Ridge, Montclair Deputy Chief Duncan confirmed. He said, "The MFD responded and found leaves burning on the tracks." After extinguishing the fire, NJ Transit issued an alert that trains were experiencing up to a 30 minute delay. Duncan added, "The fire was caused by the track heater, which ignited surrounding leaves."
New Jersey Transit and fire officials confirmed that a switch heater ignited debris on the tracks. Glen Ridge Police stated that the fire was extinguished immediately.
