US Will Reimburse Somerset County for Trump Visits

WASHINGTON - New Jersey Rep. Lance (R-7th) has confirmed that the United States Secret Service has designated Bedminster a priority for presidential protection – allowing law enforcement and other protection-related costs eligible for reimbursement by the federal government.

“Somerset County Prosecutor Michael H. Robertson and the excellent law enforcement personnel in New Jersey have a tremendous duty: assisting the Secret Service in protecting the President and keeping residents safe during President Trump’s visits to New Jersey," Lance said.

"I believe the additional law enforcement expenses are a federal responsibility and I will continue to seek parity for Bedminster and Somerset County,” said Lance whose district includes Bedminster, the location of the Trump National Golf Club.

Trump is a frequent visitor to the former 900-acre estate of automaker John DeLorean. He flew in to New Jersey last weekend to attend the USGA Women's Open national golf tournament.

Lance previously announced that the U.S. Department of Justice is permitting New Jersey, New York and Florida to apply for funding related to the protection of President Trump during the presidential transition. Trump used the estate to interview candidates for high-ranking jobs in the administration, including Mitt Romney and Gov. Chris Christie.

Since taking office, President Trump has made a number of trips to the Trump National Golf Club, prompting the heavy involvement of local law enforcement.

With this new designation, Bedminster is now considered a ‘residence of the President’ and will be eligible to apply to receive federal grants exclusively for providing reimbursement of law enforcement personnel costs for protection activities.  Lance secured funds for the program through a recent government funding measure.
