MONTCLAIR, NJ – Kadel Allen, longtime Montclair resident, has passed away at the age of 90.

Allen is father to former Montclair Fire Chief Kevin Allen and Judy Allen-Shaw.

TAPinto Montclair caught up with Allen multiple times over the years. Although 90, Allen was an active member of the American Legion Crawford Crews Post 251 and visible throughout the Montclair community.

Each time the doors of Post 251 opened for an event or fundraiser for veterans, Allen would make his way down and engage in discussion with his longtime friends. Although a soft-spoken man, Allen was full of wisdom. Every time he was spotted in the community, Allen would be proudly wearing his WWII veteran's hat or decorative veteran's attire and a smile.

In October of 2014, during a fundraising event held at Post 251, Allen joined his peers John Knox and Frank McArthur as they praised one another's service to this country with a jovial banter. Allen said, “This guy (Knox) is 96 years old and you wouldn’t even know it, the way he’s running around.” Knox was sharing an envelope that was mailed to him from California, of which contents included a bio of his life and service to America, as it is listed on the State of New Jersey website.

Allen, who has lived in Montclair since childhood, said during the 2014 interview, “I was drafted into the Army in 1944. I had wanted to go into the service."

After honorably discharging from the service, Allen said that he returned to Montclair to marry and raise a family.

Memorial services have not yet been announced.
