Women-lead “Hands to Hearts” craft & holiday gift show looks to raise money for the Planned Parenthood affiliate who was forced out of Title X funding

Newark, NJ – On a brisk fall weekend in Montclair, women artisans from around the county will gather to host a weekend-long holiday craft and gift fair to help Planned Parenthood of Metropolitan New Jersey (PPMNJ) recoup lost funding.

The event is at the Montclair Planned Parenthood Health Center at 29 North Fullerton Ave, on Saturday November 16th from 11am-5pm and Sunday, November 17th from 12pm-5pm. Thirteen craftswomen will offer a variety of gift items including jewelry, body creams and lotions, silk scarves, clay work (functional and sculptural), children’s wear, and a selection of home decor made by women in Uganda.  Each of the artists will donate a portion of their proceeds to PPMNJ.  Additional funds will be raised through a raffle of handcrafted items created by the artists, and a sale of baked goods made by members of Women for Progress, a grassroots, progressive, women’s rights activist organization, which is cosponsoring the event.

Vicki Pollack, a clay artist from Montclair, explains how the event originated three years ago.  “After the election in 2016, my daughter Amy Gurowitz and I felt we needed to show our support for Planned Parenthood-which had come under attack by the President-to-be.  We organized a sale of pottery at our house and invited friends and neighbors.  The following year we felt we needed to up the game and expand our space.  With the support of PPMNJ we moved the sale to the Montclair Planned Parenthood Health Center.  Twelve more craftswomen eagerly joined the effort.  During that show, I was astounded by the number of women who came forward with stories about how Planned Parenthood ‘saved their lives’, clearly demonstrating the critical role the organization plays in our community.”

PPMNJ, which serves all of Essex, Hudson and Passaic counties, with five health centers, has been forced out of Title X, the nation’s only program for affordable birth control and reproductive health services. The Trump-Pence administration’s Title X gag rule prevents medical providers from discussing abortion access with patients. This is deeply unethical and dangerous for patients, and as a result of the enforcement of this rule, Planned Parenthood affiliates across the country have been forced out of the program. This will have a significant impact on the nearly 20,000 Title X patients PPMNJ sees each year.
