International Music and Culture Festival featuring performances, food and vendors

Newark, NJ—Newark School of the Arts (NSA) presents the first International Music and Culture Festival in the Lincoln Park community bringing together Music, Dance, and Visual Arts from different cultures around our city and beyond.  The event is sponsored by the Show Me Your Heart Foundation, supporting children globally through the international language of music and the arts; Heather Choi, President. The festival will take place Saturday, October 12, 2019 in the Newark School of the Arts Campus located at 89 Lincoln Park, Newark New Jersey from 11 am to 4 pm and will feature performances from Korea, Poland, Brazil, India, Argentina, Dominican Republic and other cultures represented in the Newark School of the Arts student body as well as in our city.  There will be food and other vendors, crafts for kids, a traditional dress booth where people can try on traditional costumes, and activities for the whole family.  The event will also feature an art exhibit featuring student created works inside the school open all day and a free Music and Movement parent and child class at 10 am. The festival is free and open to the public.

NSA Board Member Heather Choi’s desire to share the beauty of the Korean culture was the genesis of this project, which began in 2017 with a Korean Week here at the NSA. Polish born SMYH Board member Karolina Dehnhard, Chair of the New Jersey Matrimonial and Family Law Group at Norris McLaughlin and President of the Polish American Chamber of Commerce for the Northeast Corridor and Poland, offered to demonstrate her own Polish culture this year and thus, the International Culture Festival was born.  This festival kicks off a series of fundraising events benefitting the Newark School of the Arts and announces a The International Festival Music Competition that will culminate in a concert featuring 6 winners at Lincoln Center Theater in New York City June 6, 2020.

The event is presented as part of the Newark Arts Festival, which puts a spotlight on Newark’s artistic and cultural institutions, features both nationally recognized and also emerging, local creatives, and provides attendees the opportunity to shop and purchase the work of over 100 artists in their open studios. Alongside the visual arts, music, dance, theater and spoken word can be found throughout the festival, as well as hands-on arts activities for youth.

The Newark School of the Arts has been the Lincoln Park Arts anchor for 52 years.  Established in 1968 by two Newark Teachers as a response to the troubling conditions of the era, the Newark School of the Arts (NSA) changes the lives of youth through access to quality education in the performing and visual arts. We accomplish this by providing excellence in sequential education and training, offering an emerging state of the art learning environment, accepting students of all ages and abilities, and partnering with other successful arts educators while maintaining affordability and accessibility. NSA is a family and community oriented school that has served 46,000 individuals since its inception, and provides education for up to 600 students each week and over 750 in off-site programs throughout the city.

Show Me Your Heart Foundation believes that investing in people is the way to make this world a better place. And we intend to expand our agenda through educational programs and support from professionals of various fields. We practice our belief by collaborating with other influential organizations.
