The Junior League of Montclair Newark Presents: Skills 4 Life

On Saturday, March 28th, 2020 from 1-4pm, The Junior League of Montclair-Newark (JLMN) and The Newark Opportunity Youth Network (NOYN) will present Skills 4 Life, a youth empowerment conference for teens, ages 14-19, with the goal to educate, entertain, and inspire, at the TREC / Training Recreation Education Center in Newark.

Skills 4 Life offers teens an afternoon of engaging workshop speakers, business skills, giveaways and prizes! Motivational speakers will share their personal and professional journeys, knowledge, and stories behind their success. The impressive lineup of speakers includes keynote Marques Aquil Lewis, and workshop speakers Clarise Simmons, Irving Charm, Jean Clervil, and Vonda McPhearson, who bring expertise, ranging from government and culinary arts, to personal branding and entrepreneurship.

Marques Aquil Lewis - Keynote Speaker
Marques Aquil Lewis is a motivational speaker, preacher, activist, father, politician and former Chairperson of the Newark Board of Education. He has dedicated his life to working with young people, and is determined to reduce the dropout rate, move students from school to careers, protect our after-school programs, and return power back into the hands of the parents and community. 

Clarise Simmons - Social Media and Personal Branding
Clarise Simmons is a Graduate of Cicely Tyson School of Performing and Fine Arts. Clarise has worked with Blue Cross Blue Shield, Newark Arts, The Common Agency, Brown Girls Bar Crawl, and The Outpour. She is actively working to create content with the intention to increase holistic wealth and knowledge in black and brown communities.

Irving Charm - Real Estate & Entrepreneurship
Irving Charm is an exceptional and distinguished real estate agent. He is a recognized expert on diversity & inclusion, youth advocacy, real estate trends, and affordable housing.

Jean Clervil - Motivational Speaker and Author
Jean Clervil is a best-selling author and speaker. Jean has motivated many to find out exactly what they want to do for a living; especially students through his poetry, inspirational stories and successful strategies. Jean changes lives by showing audiences across the globe how they are an idea away from being a success story.

Vonda McPherson - Culinary Arts
Vonda McPherson has been a fixture throughout the NJ/NY metropolitan region showcasing her culinary talents and work within the community. She has opened restaurant ventures, Shacks BBQ, Vonda Catering and Events, Vonda’s Kitchen, and in partnership with the Newark Housing Authority, The Greenhouse Café.

About The Newark Opportunity Youth Network

The Newark Opportunity Youth Network’s Re-Engagement Center is designed to attract and intake young people who are between 16-24 years old for job training skills and industry-recognized certifications in construction, healthcare, and technology, while earning a high school diploma.

Founded in 1921, the JLMN is a non-profit organization of trained volunteers focused on building stronger communities through programming, partnerships, and advocacy. In particular, the organization works to provide meaningful, hands-on projects which serve children in foster care in the Essex County communities of Bloomfield, the Caldwells, Cedar Grove, Essex Fells, Glen Ridge, Irvington, Montclair, Newark, and Verona.
