MONTCLAIR, NJ - A popular Montclair restaurant has been slapped with a violation for allegedly serving customers indoors last weekend, according to the New Jersey State Police officials.
During a daily COVID-19 press conference held by Gov. Phil Murphy on Monday, Col. Pat Callahan of the NJ State Police said that Cuban Pete's, located on Bloomfield Avenue, had been among three locations across New Jersey, cited last weekend for Executive Order violations.
Since lockdown orders started in March, Gov. Murphy has since lifted certain restrictions on New Jersey businesses. Though NJ restaurants continue to be banned from serving customers indoors, they are now allowed to offer outdoor dining, takeout and delivery.
According to Callahan, the Montclair police responded to the restaurant after receiving a report about indoor dining, and the owner was charged with violating the Executive Order.
During the pandemic, Cuban Pete's had also come under public scrutiny for how customers were alleging they were treated by the owner. Last month, Cuban Pete's had also come under fire on social media for allegedly mistreating black customers, according to published posts.
The firestorm apparently started after a Newark Pastor ordered from the restaurant and the owner was alleged to have hung up on the potential customer and then allegedly made remarks about keeping his, "black lives matter money." This Facebook live video posted by the Pastor, resulted in a social media debate of other former Cuban Pete's customers stating that they have experienced rude service from the establishment, as well. Meanwhile, a quick review of the Yelp page, echoed the same. Despite the allegations, there were some loyal customers who rushed to the defense of the establishment and owner. The end result came after there were calls for a protest and a date planned. However, after the Pastor went to visit the owner face-to-face and then the establishment issued a formal statement, he stated that he then called off the proposed demonstration.
A call to Cuban Pete's did not return request for comment on the violation. No further details were made available.
