MONTCLAIR, NJ – A tentative contract agreement between the Montclair Board of Education and Montclair Education Association was announced during the public board meeting on Wednesday, June 5 at the George Inness Atrium.
Presiding over the meeting were Superintendent Dr. Kendra Johnson, new Board President Eve Robinson, new Vice President Latifah Jannah, Business Administrator and Board Secretary Emidio D’Andrea, Priscilla Church, Anne Mernin, and Alfred Davis. Not present was Jessica de Koninck.
The handshake agreement between the Montclair Board of Education and Montclair Education Association was announced halfway through Wednesday’s gathering during the board discussion portion of the meeting and was met with applause from those in attendance.
“Jessica de Koninck and myself spent a very long evening last Wednesday (May 29) with our colleagues from the district and we were there until 5:00 am and happy to say we were able to reach a tentative agreement with the Montclair Education Association for a new contract,” said President Robinson. “We do not have any details right now, but a tentative agreement has been reached and it was reached at 4:30 am.”
Robinson continued, “We thank the association for their efforts because they were there as well until 4:30 am and we shook hands on it, and we hope to have more details on it as soon as the contract and the documents become available.”
Kendra Johnson began the Superintendent Report speaking about ongoing community initiatives, and congratulated several athletic accomplishments recently achieved by township athletes.
“Montclair Bounce is a new concept to the community, and it seems like it is going to bring a breath of fresh air and optimism for us all, and embracing the best in all of us,” said Superintendent Johnson. “The theme that our young people have right now at Renaissance Middle School is mental health and we are coming together to educate our young people and adults so that we can build this world together.”
“Our golf team won the North 1, Group 4 Championship, so kudos to them,” Johnson said. “Our boys tennis team won the North 1, Group 4 Sectional Championship – what an awesome job. Our baseball team won the Greater Newark Tournament by beating Seton Hall Prep, so we have bragging rights for an entire year.”
In terms of the Montclair High School schedule, Johnson advised residents to reach out to the principal for those with any questions.
President Robinson also spoke about the Bounce program and gave thanks to Ann Mernin for the work she did to organize the festival that is currently going on.
“The community meal on Friday night was also very special and truly inspiring to see all the tables full and everyone having a meal together,” Robinson added.
The new board committee and liaison appointments are in the process of being reorganized but it was announced that Priscilla Church will head the policy committee.
The next Montclair Board of Education regular public meeting is Monday, June 17 in the George Inness Atrium. The meeting begins at 5:30 pm and immediately goes into closed session until approximately 7:30 pm when it re-opens to the public.
