MONTCLAIR, NJ - The Essex County Clerk's office has updated the election results for the Montclair Municipal Election on Friday.
First round of results had Sean Spiller ahead of Renee Baskerville, MD by 450 votes. As of Friday, the results have been updated and with nearly 3000 additional votes counted, Spiller is ahead of Baskerville by
Official results will be announced on Monday, May 18, according to officials.
According to the updated tally released by the Essex County Clerk's office on Friday, Spiller is ahead of Baskerville by an unofficial 195 vote count for the mayoral seat.
Unofficial results are now showing that 10,748 votes for mayor have been casted as of Friday, with Spiller having 5,445 votes (50.66 percent), Baskerville with 5,250 (48.6 percent) and 53 write-in. Due to COVID-19 stay-at-home orders, candidates were not allowed to campaign door-to-door and registered voters were mailed ballots. Therefore, certifying and counting all ballots postmarked by May 12 is taking longer than in usual elections.
Seats up for election were mayor, two council-at-large seats, and one ward-council seat, depending on their ward.
With 30,093 registered voters in Montclair, mailing in ballots has seen a much larger turnout than the last municipal election in 2016.
