Room to Read is thrilled to welcome local NJ author Kara Richardson Whitely as our featured speaker for our second annual, first virtual, Breakthrough Breakfast to benefit the Room to Read Girls' Education Program. The event is held annually in early October to recognize International Day of the Girl an international observance day declared by the United Nations.
Full or partial school closures have exacerbated the learning crisis in low income countries. Many girls who must pause their education may never return to school. Girls are forced into early marriage, labor or trafficked. Room to Read has paved new ways to deliver education through messaging, WhatsApp and radio, the most commonly accessed technology globally for those without internet connectivity.
Room to Read is a global nonprofit focused on literacy and gender equality in education in 16 countries. 2020 marks the 20th Anniversary of Room to Read. Room to Read has educated nearly 20 million children, distributed 20 million books in 35 languages and helped 100,000 girls complete secondary school through life skills training, mentoring and material support. www.roomtoread.org
The New Jersey Chapter joined the global chapter network of Room to Read in 2011 to friendraise and fundraise for Room to Read programs. Of the nearly 800 million illiterate people in the world, two thirds are women. We are fortunate to benefit from the birth lottery of life and an unparalleled education system in New Jersey and the Northeast. We are devoted and determined to give the lifelong gift of literacy to children and girls around the globe.
Kara will be sharing her story and her book Gorge: My Journey Up Mount Kilimanjaro at 300 Pounds. Kara is a plus-size author, public speaker and adventurer. The theme for the breakfast is motivation: rising above the "no" internally and externally to move forward towards your goals.
