GLEN RIDGE--The Glen Ridge High football team won its first game of the 2019 season when it defeated Montclair Kimberley, 30-12, on Sept. 14, in Montclair.
Coached by Steve Trivino, the Ridgers were 1-3 overall, heading into its next game on Oct. 5, against Newark Collegiate High, starting at 2 p.m., at Hurrell Field.
The Ridgers had lost its season opener to Shabazz, 30-20, in a close game, before defeating MKA. Since that game, the team was defeated by strong teams in Weequahic, 40-14, and undefeated Cedar Grove, 41-11.
In the victory over MKA, the Ridgers jumped out to a 21-6 halftime lead as Njam Wright, quarterback Ben Bronstein and James McCarren all scored on rushing touchdowns. Patrick Bronander scored on a 78-yard run in the third quarter and Glen Ridge kicker Matt McCann finished a strong kicking day with a 20-yard field goal in the fourth quarter. McCann also converted three of four extra point kicks.
Bronstein completed 9 of 13 passes for 151 yards and also rushed for 67 yards. Bronander led the running game with 105 yards and Brendan Easter rushed for 67 yards.
Versus Weequahic, Easter and Colin Ducey scored touchdowns.
GIRLS SOCCER: After a slow start, the Ridgers had won two straight, both by shutout, heading into an Oct. 1 home game versus Hudson Catholic.
Head coach Oscar Viteri's team defeated Roselle Park, 3-0, on Sept. 25, then blanked Caldwell, 2-0, two days later. Olivia Hoover scored twice and Sarah Cullinan had one goal in the win over Roselle Park while Tara Feenaghty finished with two assists. Olivia Carbonell finished with five saves in goal for the shutout.
Versus Caldwell, Feenaghty had a goal and an assist, Alison Shea scored once and Carbonell finished with four saves. After losing its first two games of the season, the Ridgers' first win of 2019 came on Sept. 10, 4-0, over Bloomfield. Feenaghty registered a hat trick and Cullinan had one goal while Hoover and Shea each had an assist.
TENNIS: Through Sept. 27, the Ridgers were 3-9 against a tough schedule, with a pair of 3-2 wins against West Orange as well as a 5-0 victory over Golda Och.
In a Sept. 21 win over West Orange, Campbell Moriarty won in straight sets, at third singles, while both doubles teams prevailed. Macy Eaton and Erin Hirsch won at first doubles and Jamie Newman and Charlotte Keany prevailed at second doubles.
Glen Ridge has also received good performances form Michaila Dowd at first singles and Haleigh Pine at second singles.
The Ridgers were back in action, at Nutley, on Oct. 1 and will play Montclair, at Mountainside Park, in Upper Montclair, on Oct. 3.
