BOONTON, NJ - Boonton police are investigating an incident of vandalism and criminal trespassing that occurred in the early weeks of January in the United Railroad Historical Society’s restoration facility in Boonton.
On Jan. 14, volunteers found extensive graffiti on eight pieces of equipment, as well as broken windows in a locomotive and damage from a discharged emergency fire extinguisher in another. The cost of repairs in preliminarily estimated at $15,000.
Two of the railroad cars that were vandalized are used for the NJ Toys for Tots Train, a charity train which annually collects more than 20,000 donated items for the Marine Toys for Toys Foundation. The two cars, a 1926 Pennsylvania Railroad baggage car and a camouflage-decorated box car, were restored by the URHS and Military Transport Association with preservation grants and donations.
All 10 pieces of damaged equipment will have to be repaired and repainted by volunteer labor.
