Cross Country Team Honored, Major Change to Montville 4th of July: Montville Twp Committee Mtg

MONTVILLE, NJ – The Montville Township Committee recognized the 2017 Montville Recreation Cross Country Team. As outlined in this article from November: four titles, the team did extremely well at the Lakeland League Championship Meet held Oct. 28.

In the 13-14 Boys division, the Montville Township team won the championship title for the third year in a row. The 11-12 Girls team took second place for the second year in a row. The 9-10 Girls team came in second place. The 6-8 Girls team took first place, as did the 9-10 Boys team.

Kelsie Faherty won the Lakeland League Championship 6-8 year old girls, took third at States, eighth at Regionals, and out of 218 girls took 71st at Nationals, Coach Whitney Zammit said.

Eighth grader Robert George was among the top ten fastest teams to ever run on the Greystone Park 3K course, Zammit said.

Cameron Sontz was awarded the 2017 Athlete of the Year, his second year in a row being honored this way by USATF Track and Field. He achieved the third fastest time ever to run the Greystone Park 2K course, and with Robert he is among the top ten for the 3K course at only age 9.

Alex Pelov was awarded 2017 Athlete of the Year by USATF with Sontz, having run the second fastest time on the Greystone Park 2K course, and among the top ten fastest times for the 3K course. Pelov is age 10.

Volunteer Coach Samantha George was honored by Recreation Commissioner Larry Manfra and Recreation Director Lori Dent. Dent called her “an extraordinary mentor and role model who understands the importance of building confidence and self esteem.”

Manfra and Dent also honored Coach Whitney Zammit, who is leaving the program. Dent said the program has had some of its most successful seasons under her leadership. Dent said she is an “amazing influence who has taught the kids sportsmanship, dedication, patience and many other values…You truly will be missed.”

Other News

There will be no Fourth of July parade this year due to the cost and low attendance.

The Community Park playground will be renovated this year, and liaison to the Recreation Commission Committee Member Richard Cook said it will be very handicap accessible.

Drug Awareness Council-Municipal Alliance liaison Committee Member June Witty said dances will resume in May and the group will be holding a seminar as well as Narcan training.
