MONTVILLE, NJ - Curious George, with all his antics, came to visit Montville Township’s Kiddie Academy for an open house as the school prepares for September enrollment. The school opened in January 2017 and now is preparing for its first full school year.

On Saturday, July 29, Kiddie Academy, located at 350 Main Road, held an open house for guests to tour the school, see Curious George and hear his stories.

Curious George is a popular children’s book character created by H.A. Rey and Margret Rey. The books feature a brown monkey named George, who is brought from Africa by "The Man with the Yellow Hat" to live with him in a big city. Needless to say, George always finds himself in difficult situations while teaching children lessons in a fun way.

Before the event, Curious George and friend Natalie Pavone stood outside the school encouraging people to stop in.

Bernie Klein, franchise owner, said, “The enrollment is growing every day, and we are looking forward to September.”

Klein said that the school is open 52 weeks of the year and is closed only for regular holidays, which makes it very convenient for working parents. It is open from 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. with meals and snacks provided by the academy that is cooked in their own kitchen. There is emphasis on healthy living with fresh, wholesome foods, along with classroom and playground exercise.

The school includes classes starting with the infant room and going through all preschool ages. It also has a private kindergarten program that follows the same kindergarten curriculum as the Montville Township Public Schools.

Klein said that the academy keeps in contact with the Montville Township Education Foundation and Dr. Rene Rovtar, the superintendent of Montville Township Public Schools.

Security is a major concern. Each family is given a different security code to enter the building, and each classroom has a security camera. Parents can watch their children online with a live streaming video from WatchMeGrow. There is easy access from any web browser or with a mobile app.

A parent communication portal is available. There is an Academy Link powered by Tadpoles, which is a communication portal. There is real-time visibility, communication between school and parents, a first-hand look at classroom activities, notifications and documentation of developmental progress. Parents also receive teacher comments, photos and videos of their child’s special moments. All information is private.

There is a free music program connected to Kindermusik International, and technology is used in classrooms every day. Tablets, computers, MP3 players and interactive whiteboards are among the technology used to enhance learning.

Character education also plays a large role in Kiddie Academy’s curriculum. Values such as cooperation, self-reliance, patience, and respect are among the many principles stressed.

Science, technology, engineering and mathematics (S.T.E.M.) opportunities are made available to all students, and sign language is taught in the infant room to reduce crying and aid in communication.

Overparenting: What Is It and Why Do We Do It?

Overparenting.  It’s the new buzzword for helicopter parenting, enabling and micromanaging.  I did them all. I’m happy to say that I’ve (mostly) grown out of it.  The truth is that there are still moments when I have the urge to step in and take over.  It’s normal to feel that way; however, I know I’ve made progress when I feel the urge and ...
