As CEO of Girl Scouts of Northern New Jersey, I meet many people from all walks of life and in all stages of their careers. I am always amazed when people tell me about their career journey as I often discover that most people end up in careers they originally didn’t consider.

I also talk to many girls and young women who have a high ambition. I advise them to be open to new possibilities and new adventures. Many successful women and men are offered positions that they never intended to seek. As they say, when opportunity knocks, you should answer.

Never stop learning. In an ever-changing world, the worst thing to become is obsolete. Check out the latest trends in the job market. When technology affects your field of work, don’t hesitate to update your skills.

Want to switch careers? It’s never to late to go back to school and learn about another area of interest. Research the most sought-after skills and jobs that will be in demand.

Find a mentor and/or be a mentor to someone else. Experience is one of the most valuable skills a person can pass on to another.

Networking opportunities and professional organizations also offer individuals the chance to speak to others, learn about an industry and work with others. Career opportunities also crop up when your social network is wide.

The best advice is always to find a career and job that you have a passion for and will make you happy. Your days will be rewarding and it will make getting out of bed each day a little easier.
