MONTVILLE, NJ - The Montville girls basketball team has been riding high lately, as it took a seven-game winning streak into Saturday's Morris County Tournament quarterfinal against top seeded Chatham.
But that streak came to an end, as it was unable to recover from an early first-quarter deficit in a 38-29 loss to Chatham on Saturday at Morris Knolls High School.
The Mustangs fell behind, 14-4 in the first quarter and went into the half trailing by 14 points at 24-10. It mananged to outscore Chatham 8-3 in the third quarter to cut its deficit to nine, but was unable to complete the comeback in the fourth quarter.
Dani Vito led the way offensively for Montville with 11 points. Bella Vito added eight points and seven rebounds, while Livia Shine added seven points and six rebounds.
However, this is not the end of postseason play for the Mustangs. They earned the eighth seed in the North 1, Group 3 state tournament, and will host ninth-seeded Indian Hills on Feb. 26 at 7 p.m. in the first round. Before that, it still has regular season games against Morristown (Feb. 13), Caldwell (Feb. 18) and Morris Catholic (Feb. 20).
