MONTVILLE, NJ - With three games to go in the regular season, Montville tied its win total of 18 from last year with a 45-33 victory over Sparta on Thursday at home.
The Spartans came out strong outscoring Montville 12-8 in the first quarter. However, the Lady Mustangs answered back with 18 points to Sparta's 6 in the second quarter. Montville's Emma Wax ended the half with a buzzer beater from well outside the 3-point line to put Montville ahead 26-18 at the half. Both teams came out of the locker room playing strong defense in the third quarter, resulting in only a handful of points each and multiple team fouls. The Lady Mustangs turned up the heat again in the fourth quarter scoring 17 points to Sparta's 10, with both teams in foul trouble by the end of the game matching each other with a total of 10 points from the foul line. One differentiator in the game was in the shots made beyond the 3-point arc as Montville sunk 7 to Sparta's 1 3-pointer.
Wax was the lead scorer of the game with 20 points, including 3 3-pointers and 9 free throws. Wax was also tough on defense with 5 steals and 5 rebounds. The Lady Mustangs' Dani Campbell also sunk 3 3-point shots to give her 9 points for the game and pulled down 3 rebounds while Dani Vito contributed 4 points, 5 rebounds and 3 steals.
The Spartans (14-7) were lead by Erin Walsh who had 13 points, including 7 free throws and Emily Dilger with 11 points.
Montville, now 18-4, plays its Senior Night home game on Monday, Feb. 19 at 5:30 p.m. against Morristown Beard.
