MONTVILLE, NJ – Staying in Montville Township this summer? How about a Montville staycation? There’s lots to do in the township, all throughout the summer.
If you’re free on Tuesday nights, take in some music as the recreation department’s free summer concert series has started. Bands such as the Chapel band, Degrees Below Zero and Arena will be rocking at the amphitheater on the hill behind the Montville Township Public Library. Click here to see the band schedule and descriptions: music.
How about taking a class? Kids can learn to cook, dance and draw. Middle schoolers can learn the fine art of debate or how to golf. Adults can learn Ju-Jitsu, play basketball or pickleball. There are 27 camps listed on the forms and flyers link at the Montville Township Recreation website!
While you’re there, you can hop on the bus – to see the Yankees play the Kansas City Royals on July 27; Recreation has a bus trip all planned out for you (flyer). Seniors can hop a bus to the Finger Lakes through the Senior Club.
If you’re in the mood for a road trip, Recreation has discounted tickets to 17 theme parks and attractions in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, such as Dorney Park, Six Flags, Morey’s Pier, Splash Zone water park in Wildwood, the Philadelphia Zoo, Medieval Times jousting experience, and Adventure Aquarium in Camden. See the list and details here: discount tickets.
How about FREE passes rather than discount tickets? The library will loan them to you! Check out their list of museum passes: Museum of Modern Art in Manhattan, Grounds for Sculpture in Hamilton, the Battleship Intrepid, the Morris Museum, the Montclair Art Museum, plus four more. The details are here: museum passes.
The view from Pyramid Mountain is breathtaking, and they have lots of supervised hikes and programs there. Check out Pathways magazine for the calendar of twilight hikes, kid friendly programs, and on Aug. 4 they’ll have a supervised hike to Tripod Rock. They have camps there too.
If you’re looking for other, flatter trails, they are located beyond the playground in the Community Park, beyond the barn at Camp Dawson, behind the Land Conservancy of New Jersey building at 19 Boonton Ave.
GO FISH! There’s fishing available on Lake Montowac (on Changebridge Road) and at Camp Dawson. (You’ll need a license if you’re over 16 and under 70.)
Planning an adventure abroad? How about learning the language of the natives? The library has Rosetta Stone language learning software you can access for free with your library card. Then sign in to the site and choose from 32 languages like Turkish, French, Hebrew or Farsi.
Or maybe you’re just staying home and you want to know how your relatives got here and when. The library can also help with that – you can access free genealogy software.
Throughout the summer, the library will be holding programs for adults, kids and families, including movies, lectures, storytimes and crafts. See the calendar here: programs. Personally, I’m going to be at the ice cream storytime at 7 p.m. every Wednesday night.
Make sure your kids get their fill of the playground in the Community Park, though! Construction on the new, completely revamped, inclusive version commences at the beginning of August. The playground will be out of commission for about two months. See: new playground.
